Selecting a heater type. Do you want more of a steam sauna? If so then a Finnish rock heater is appropriate. Do you want a lower temperature? If so then Infrared sauna rooms are popular. There are also sauna rooms that have both combo Infrared and rock heaters. Try each technology before you buy. Most existing sauna enthusiast are disappointed in Infrared heaters.
Choose a good wood for your sauna. Cedar has always been the choice wood but is also the most expensive. However its properties are worth the investment. Cedar does not warp and does not rot. Cedar has natural insulating properties that leaves it feeling cool even in a hot sauna. Stay away from cheap woods such as hemlock especially if you are looking at using steam in your home sauna. Saunas built in Asia tend to be cheaper but also lack the quality.
Ventilating your home sauna room. All saunas need to have fresh air. Circulating new air into a sauna is important. A sauna room should draw in fresh air and expel the hot moist air. be sure to have a proper ventilation system in your sauna room. The air can be exhausted outside same as your dryer.
Home saunas come in two forms, DYI kit and modular kit. The DYI kits are material packages and they need to be framed. The modular sauna rooms are prebuilt walls and they go together quicker. DYI sauna kits can make a better sauna rooms if you chose quality materials, however they require some carpentry skills.
